Soda Ash is the common name tor sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), which has a molar mass of 105.9888 g/mol
(anhydrous).
Soda ash is inexpensive and is used as an economical method tor removing soluble calcium. Magnesium is similarly precipitated as insoluble magnesium carbonate; however, a more effective treatment tor magnesium hardness is caustic soda, which precipitates magnesium hydroxide. The equations tor calcium salts are:
Ca2• + 2OH· +2Na• +COt ➔ CaCO3 i +2Na• + 2OH· Ca2• + SO /’ + 2Na•+ COt ➔ CaCO3 i + 2Na• + SO /’
ADVANTAGES
• An effective, economic treatment tor calcium removal
• Widely used throughout the drilling industry
APPLICATIONS
Primarily used to treat soluble calcium in make-up water and the circulating-fluid system
USAGE
Soda Ash is added at 0.000927 lb/bbl (0.00264 kg/m3) to treat 1.0 mg/L of calcium. Theretore, the naturaL approach is to determine the soluble calcium content of the water phase by standard analytical methods, calculate the total treatment required, and proceed to add the soda ash over a complete circulation.
Divalent species such as calcium and magnesium (significant concentrations in seawater) cause undesirable increases in viscosity, gel strengths, and loss of filtration control. Consequently, removal or reduction in the concentration of divalent cations is routine in drilling fluids engineering.
Caution is advised when treating with soda ash because overtreatment can lead to an excess of soluble carbonates that can increase viscosity.
Consult the MSDS, safety posters, and/or product label betore use, and use personal protective equipment as advised.
