Citric acid is used to reduce the pH of drilling fluid. Citric acid creates a hydrogen ion layer around the active clays, reducing the zeta potential (repulsion and pulling value between the particles) of the clays, thereby weakening their ability to absorb water. This reduces the swelling of clays in the drilling fluid by breaking down.
